Working together to prevent infectious zoonotic diseases

Writing for the Singaporean daily English-language newspaper Straits Times, Dr Alwyn Tan, a veterinarian and the Director of Biorisk and Biosurveillance at Singapore's Animal & Veterinary Service, says pet owners can protect their pets and themselves against zoonotic diseases including toxoplasmosis, salmonellosis, and leptospirosis through regular vet check-ups, good hygiene, and informing doctors about animal contact if unwell. Such diseases, which spread from animals to humans, are increasing due to urbanisation, climate change, and evolving pet care. The author is also a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine.
