Forensic vet seeks justice for pets

Dr. Shane Bateman of the University of Guelph in Ontario is one of only a few veterinarians in Canada trained in forensic veterinary science. He recalls an epiphanic moment at a conference when veterinarian Dr. Melinda Merck spoke about how animal victims of abuse and neglect rarely see justice in the current system. Too few veterinarians, she said, are trained to recognize, document and provide support in investigations and prosecutions. “We’re very behind,” Bateman remembers Merck saying. “I realized she was right.” He returned to the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph with a mission to design programming that would equip future vets to ensure justice for abused animals.
