Cattle ranchers are big winners of rising beef prices

Patrick Thomas in the Wall Street Journal reports on how U.S. cattle ranchers are enjoying record profits as shrinking herds and strong beef demand push prices to historic highs. With per-animal profits exceeding $700, ranchers are paying debts, upgrading equipment, and investing in genetics. Nebraska’s Shaun Loughery, a sixth-generation rancher, doubled spending on breeding bulls to boost quality. Thomas says that while consumers face soaring beef prices, ranchers - after years of losses - are cautiously capitalizing, wary of expanding herds too quickly and risking another downturn.
