Pioneering Lubbock veteran retires

Dr. Sonja Lee, the first woman to graduate from Texas A&M vet school, has retired after a long career in Lubbock. In the early 1960s, Dr. Lee applied to Texas A&M. The once all-male military school didn’t start admitting women until 1963. “I’m just glad I was born in the right year,” she said. Dr. Lee was the first woman to graduate from the vet school in 1966. Now, women make up about three-quarters of the classes at the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. “I’m glad . . . that it’s easy for women to get in now, I mean easier,” she says.
