San Francisco’s largest animal shelter announces layoffs

San Francisco’s largest animal shelter and veterinary hospital, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, has announced the layoff of 32 people, or 11% of its staff. “Like many organizations we’re responding to a lot of external pressures that have been building, particularly over the last six months,” said Dr. Jennifer Scarlett, the nonprofit organization’s CEO, adding that the layoffs will not have an impact on services at the hospital and that the organization does not plan to cut or reduce any programs, but rather to streamline operations.
