Gel can repair and regrow tooth enamel

« Back to Dental

Scientists from the University of Nottingham in the U.K. have developed a groundbreaking gel that can repair and regrow tooth enamel. The fluoride-free gel mimics the proteins that form dental enamel during infancy. Lead author Abshar Hasan said: “When our material is applied to demineralized or eroded enamel, it promotes the growth of crystals in an integrated and organized manner.” The gel has shown success in laboratory tests, filling gaps in tooth structure and attracting essential minerals from saliva. It can restore thin layers of lost enamel and alleviate tooth sensitivity. The team aims to launch a product through their start-up, Mintech-Bio, as early as next year.
