Dr. Purva Merchant, a pediatric dentist in Seattle, has embraced the responsibility of responding to thousands of children who want to get in touch with the tooth fairy. Dr. Merchant's “toothfairy” email address from 2004, which she originally used to help organize her dental school applications and keep in touch with family abroad, has for years given parents and children alike a place to contact the tooth fairy. She has averaged three to five emails a day in the two decades since, and she has responded to every one of them. Dr. Merchant sometimes responds to emails as the tooth fairy in between patients. After she reminds each recipient to keep up their brushing and flossing, she ends each message with the same sign-off: “Happy growing up!”
